Apple launches the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with new design and killer cameras

The iPhone 7 features a 4.7-inch TrueTone display with a resolution of 1334×750 pixels. The larger iPhone 7 Plus has a similar screen but with a larger 5.5-inch full HD resolution.

Like the rumours had predicted the phone retains a IPS screen, however, it also gets the same TrueTone wide gamut display technology, which Apple unveiled with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro earlier in the year.

The display also features a new generation of the 3D touch pressure sensitive display technology that Apple unveiled last year with the iPhone 6S. In fact, Apple uses this technology beyond the main display as now the home-button doesn’t feature a button per se, but has been replaced with a pressure sensitive capacitor which has broader functionality and the touch ID scanner for fingerprint scanning. This could be more reliable too as iPhone home-buttons have been prone to wear and tear.

The big deal about this phone is also its design. While Apple has more or less retained the same industrial design as the iPhone 6S, it has subtly refined it. For instance, it has reduced the number of the plastic antenna lines that run across the iPhone on the back. The one running through the back has been eradicated and there’s only one left which runs next to the side spine of the device.

As a part of the design improvements Apple has also made the phone water and dust resistant with an IP67 certification which allows the device to be submerged in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

As it was widely speculated, Apple has removed the 3.5mm headphone jack which was a staple of the iPhone and most other smartphones. For connecting headphones now the users will need to leverage the ‘Lightning connector’ which is also used for charging and connecting accessories on the iPhone.

For the same, Apple is now providing Lightning enabled EarPod earphones. Apple is also providing a lightning to 3.5mm adaptor which will enable users to attach their existing headphones with the iPhone 7.

Apple has also unveiled a new generation of wireless earphones which it calls AirPods and they will work wirelessly. These AirPods are sold separately. They are powered by a new Apple chip called the W1. They offer 5 hours of usage on a single charge.

Apple says that Beats is also using the same technology in a new line of headphones which are also launching soon.

One of the other big deals with the iPhone 7 is that it has massively upgraded rear camera. On the standard model, it retains the 12-megapixel sensor, but now it comes with a wider f/1.8 aperture, larger sensor and optical image stablisation. Apple claims massive improvements in image quality in over the iPhone 6S. It has also redone the TrueTone flash added two more LEDs and also a flicker sensor.

The bigger change is there in the rear camera of the iPhone 7 Plus. This model features not one, but two 12-megapixel cameras which come with new technology that allows users to stitch both the images together and allow for some zooming capabilities in images bereft of pixelation. Apple does this by providing a 28mm wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. There’s 2x of optical zoom, but Apple claims that the phone can have 10x software enabled zoom which will be better than standard digital zoom which normally features a massive drop in quality.

Later in the year, the iPhone 7 Plus will also get a software update for a new portrait mode in the camera. It will offer shallow depth of field in portrait shots like from high-end DSLRs.

The rear camera also supports live photos and 4K video. On the front, it has a 7-megapixel camera and the screen also lights up as a flash. Overall, even the front sensor has been improved which means that it should take better photos than the iPhone 6S.

Apple claims that it has managed to cram the iPhone with a secondary speaker for better audio and also a bigger battery which should overall result in some impressive gains when coupled with the functionality of iOS 10.

In terms of pure performance from a computational point of view, the iPhone 7 is powered by the A10 fusion four core processor. Apple claims two cores are 40 per cent faster than the dual core A9 processor on the iPhone 6S. In addition, there are two low power cores. The new GPU on the iPhone 7 50 per cent faster. Pretty much, this would mean the iPhone remains the fastest smartphone in the market.

Apple has finally ridden users of the 16GB and 64GB models and instead the iPhone 7 will start with a base offering of 32GB storage and there will also be 128GB and 256GB models. The new Jet black colour will be reserved for the 128GB and 256GB versions of the phone.

The iPhone 7 will start shipping in the US from September 16. In India, the phone will launch on October 7 for a starting price of Rs 60,000, which is lesser than the launch price of the iPhone 6S. The AirPod earphones will be sold for Rs 15,400.
